The Institute of Advanced Design Studies (ADES - AdvancedDESign) is a research institute and a pioneering school of design offering advanced studies in design for sustainability to postgraduate students and professionals from all backgrounds. Our programme has an emphasis on exploring new ways to assess the total impact and potential outcomes of design manifestations.

APPROACH

At the heart of our approach is an integrated view of Philosophy of Design and Ethics as vehicles for critical and sustainable thinking across all disciplines. ADES functions as a co-lab for design as a Productive Science, Design Philosophy and methodology.

We build our annual courses in Sustainability on transdisciplinary theme based modules.

The students work together to frame and solve a challenge within the given theme, under the guidance of their course instructor.

The Institute aims to effectively apply given theoretical knowledge to resolving a situation by design, while limiting the negative impact of the various consequences, side effects and externalities that are produced by design manifestations.

We aim to develop Interdisciplinary Design for Sustainability as a skill base for solving complex ecological and socio-economic problems with all types of professions by:

1. Introducing Design Philosophy and Ethics as a discipline for deeper contextual work in problem- solving and value generation especially in the matters of social and environmental sustainability.

2. To bring Sustainability Thinking and co-creative design tools, methods and processes to all types of experts, including scientists, technologists, engineers, biologists, ecologists, artists and philosophers.
