Jonathan D. Trent, Ph.D.

Currently a Distinguished Professor at Zhijiang College of Zhejiang University of Technology, founding director of UpCycle Systems, Adjunct Professor in BioMolecular Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Fulbright Specialist, and a Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences. After earning a Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, he conducted research at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Germany, Århus and Copenhagen Universities in Denmark, University of Paris at Orsay in France, Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine at Yale Medical School, and Argonne National Laboratory in the USA. As a NASA scientist from 1998 until 2019, he conducted research in Astrobiology, he initiated and led the NASA Protein Nanotechnology Group and the "GREEN Team" for Global Research into Energy and the Environment at Nasa. In 2010, he led the NASA OMEGA biofuels project and in 2015 founded the OMEGA Global Initiative (OGI) as an NPO. After leaving NASA in 2019, he formed UpCycle Systems (UCS) dedicated to food, water, and energy security and received a Fulbright Specialist Fellowship (2019-2022) to teach at Akureyri University in Iceland and develop an international team for a "Mission to MARS (Mobilize All Resources for Sustainability) on Earth."
